Role description

Role Overview

The Principal Software Engineer - Models will own the frontend architecture of the W&B app, responsible for app performance, stability, and reliability. This role is frontend-led but architecture-deep and organizationally wide, requiring shaping other teams' designs and building consensus across boundaries.

What You Will Do

The responsibilities include setting performance targets, driving work to meet them, deciding the app's delivery and rendering architecture, partnering with backend and platform teams on API design, proposing and driving larger overhauls, and investing in people.

Why It Might Be a Fit

The ideal candidate will have a track record of validating ideas, coordinating across engineering teams, and sequencing work that spans organizational boundaries, with a strong command of React and TypeScript, and real performance engineering skill.

Requirements

  • 8+ years building user-facing software, with deep expertise in frontend architecture and performance
  • Led the transformation of a large, long-lived React application with a focus on performance, product impact, and dev experience
  • Strong command of React and TypeScript, with production experience in GraphQL and a modern state management approach
  • Real performance engineering skill: instrumenting an application, reading frontend and backend traces, determining precisely where time is going, and proving improvement with numbers
  • Solid client-side caching fundamentals, including normalization, invalidation, and failure modes at scale
  • Hands-on experience with bundlers and build tooling, and clear views on code splitting and delivery tradeoffs
  • Enough backend depth to design systems at a high level, proposing a new API architecture in service of a faster client and reasoning about its frontend implications
  • Track record of validating ideas, coordinating across engineering teams, and sequencing work that spans organizational boundaries
  • An operator mindset: measuring, shipping, following through, and staying close to production
